Buoyant

Today life seems very, very good. I mean this week, and yesterday in particular was full of worries and struggles...but it doesn't seem to matter, does it?

Life is good.

I wish I had time to make art today, because I am so in that mood. But today is another full day. Christmas prep and packing for a short, crazy, lotsa driving, one overnight trip that we are about to take to surprise someone very, very special for her birthday.

I did however, finish one slap and dash journal page.

No words. I think I may add some at some point, but for now it speaks of my mood. The warm splashes of colour, the rough texture, the haphazard, spontaneous, messiness...because that's life, right? One person screws you over, but the next is unbelievably kind, one hour finds you rejoicing and the next tearing at your hair in frustration...the light and the dark. And this Christmas feels like a lesson in both...my husband's work BFF was just diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease, our neighbour and her children are spending their first Christmas since they lost father and husband to lung cancer...but then there are new babies and birthday surprises and big, big boxes under the tree and Candy Cane Cupcakes...

And that's what it is, both, chiaroscuro...light and dark, buttercream and bullshit. Right now, today, I just feel unbelievably lucky. This season is fairly bursting with treats and love and things to look forward too. There have been some trying moments this week, but I seriously just couldn't keep myself down if I tried.

Life is good.

PS Only 7 more sleeps.

  2. I think you should start a Chiaroscuro tag. That painting is so lovely! The colours and texture jump right off the page, even on the computer. And that candy cane cupcake? Girl, you should go into Food Dressing for a living: it's dessert porn.

And where are you going overnight? To surprise DQ?
    Oooh, do tell.

    -k.

  3. @ Maggie Thank you, and yes, so scary. Prayers, yes. We will be praying very hard.

@K It is for the DQ's party. Shhhhhhhhhhhh, don't tell. Not that she would come here anyway, not nearly enough Zac Effron or ABBA. ;)

  4. Another amazing post, with delicious, decadent desserts, beautiful art and inspiring words. Sometimes the dark can cast so big a shadow we forget to look for the light. Sometimes we get lucky and the light shines too bright for the dark to take hold. Wishing you a Holiday season filled with buoyant, happy light. Travel safe and enjoy your big surprise!

  6. Beautiful page. Color!! Our spelling looks so wrong somehow. Colour needs lotsa letters. The cupcakes are scrumptious looking. Some off-the-scale darkness there but - Buttercream and bullshit. Didn't Bilbo say that? :)

  7. I love pinks, and yellows, and oranges in the winter; it's a nice break from the reds and greens, and the silver and gold I associate with winter. Do I see bits of robin egg blue sprinkled about? This piece makes me think of India, and hot sun, and flowing saris. I'm convinced there is one of those little orange chrystathemums or perhaps a yellow and brown daisies-ish sort of flower trying to peek thru and get a glimpse of Chritmas.

Thank you, Evangeline for taking the time to post and share your ideas and your colours with us.

  8. I adore your positive attitude, Evangeline. There are dark moments to be sure, but overall life is a wonderful blessing. Merry Christmas to you and your lovely family.

  9. As you've said, life has it's ups and downs and happy and sad times. It's peaceful times and chaotic times- but as long as we are here, know that it is really from the difficult times that the flowers bloom, your heart is happy and that you can be inspired to create, give and be inspired to learn as much as you can each day! Best wishes for a wonderful and joyful new year!
